Global Seafood Alliance: “Building Trust in Seafood”

  • POSTED: 27/01/2026
  • AUTHOR: Anthony Floreno

Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) was originally founded as the Global Aquaculture Alliance by concerned shrimp farmers and aquafeed and seafood companies responding to criticism about mangrove deforestation in 1997. Our global headquarters is in Portsmouth, NH, USA, the foundation for our global team members around the world. Today, as GSA, our organization advances responsible seafood practices worldwide through education, advocacy and demonstration. GSA convenes seafood industry leaders, academia and NGOs to collaborate on cross-cutting issues like environmental and social responsibility, animal health and welfare, and food safety. GSA is the owner of the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and Best Seafood Practices (BSP) certification programs.

Why GDST?
Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) became an official partner of the GDST in May 2024.  Recognizing the importance of system interoperability and the role of standardized data frameworks within interoperable systems, GSA is committed to working with and incorporating these frameworks to technology solutions offered by our organization.

Why Digital Seafood Traceability Matters
Greater seafood traceability supports third-party assurances for advancing responsible seafood practices by directly identifying points within the seafood supply chain where product interactions occur. This aides in discovering market trends or areas of improvement, and creates a frame for the industry.

How GDST helps to Address Challenges
GSA is supporting the improvement of seafood traceability through our partnerships with traceability providers, creating the ability to connect multiple traceability providers in a single platform with GSA’s Prism and augmenting traceability data with additional assurance data using GSA’s Prism.  The GDST framework enables a consistent connectivity, regardless of traceability provider, when they are verified GDST capable.

Impact of GDST on the Business
The GDST fosters valuable collaboration efforts cross-functionally across the seafood industry. Our world is increasingly moving more towards not just the goal of traceability, but the necessity of traceability, GDST’s initiatives will continue to be important to ensure that the seafood industry meets regulatory requirements and marketplace expectations.

Long-Term Goals
GSA aims to achieve deeper collaboration across the seafood industry focused on digitization, interoperability and the necessity of standardized data frameworks.  Through our partnership with the GDST, we believe these goals can be achieved and we can offer expertise and guidance while breaking down silos and building understanding through practical use and demonstration.

Advice for Potential GDST Partners
The support of GDST demonstrates a commitment to data standards and frameworks while advancing collaboration, interoperability and communication.  It’s not about being on the journey, it’s about starting it and being involved.
